Canadian oil and gas companies are counting on cleantech to improve their environmental performance and operational efciency—so that they can competitively and cost-efectively continue to export the country’s abundant petroleum resources in compliance with new international carbon restrictions.

Traditional extraction methods are energy- and resource-intensive—especially in Alberta’s oil sands, Canada’s largest oil reserve. Te industry has identifed greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and water use as key areas for improvement. Numerous technologies are being developed to address these opportunities at every step of the process—through carbon capture and storage, for example, as well as feld upgrading, vapour extraction and the remediation of tailing ponds.

“Te oil sands sector has cut GHGs per barrel by 33 percent since 1990,” says David Collyer, President of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. “Te kinds of technologies supported by SDTC will enable further reductions.”
